Begin to network.Whether you love it or hate it, networking is part of your professional life, and it can begin to pull you out of a quarter-life crisis. It doesnt have to be large events where you awkwardly stand in front of the snack table and wait for someone to talk to you. You just need to find that one person whether a young adult or someone a bit older who you look up to professionally and who can give you some advice while you are starting out in your career.Your mentor can be an old boss, maybe a friends parentsjust anyone who is in your chosen field that you feel comfortable asking questions. If you dont know anyone in the same career that you would like to move forward in, you can try sending out informational interview requests. Usually, these involve casual coffee interviews where you schedule a time and get to ask them a lot of questions about the industry, their jobs, and how you can be successful. Its a low-pressure situation where you get to learn a lot and make valuable connections that hopefully turn into lasting relationships.3. VolunteerVolunteering is kind of a win-win-win. You give back (win), you feel good (win), and from a professional standpointits a really great way to add to your resume (win). Im not suggesting that you volunteer just to gain an edge o n the career front. If you do, youll just burn out and be less likely to commit. Also, youll probably feel pretty gross.Instead, you should find something you are really passionate about. By getting out there, you will meet like-minded people, maybe make some friends, and possibly make a connection that can lead to something years down the road. Plus, youre being proactive and making a difference. Its a great morale booster at the very least.4. Leave social media aloneAt 25, youre especially vulnerable to the success of your friends, and your frenemies. With the constant updating of whos doing this and whos accomplishing that, its hard to stay focused on what you want and how youre doing.Instead of turning to Instagram like most millennials and stalking other peoples lives (including your high school ex-boyfriends new fiance) for your daily relaxation, turn inward. As a senior architect at one of Australias leading firms, Bates Smart, she has had the opportunity to work on one of Sydneys biggest projects in Barangaroo. How long have you been in architecture? Since 2006. I began working in the field whilst I was studying. What did you want to be when you were younger? Growing up I always wanted to be a teacher. What was your first job? A crew part at McDonalds. When did you first know you wanted to get into architecture? It was not until the senior years in high school that I considered it. I even enrolled in a Business/Law degree before changing my mind last minute for the final round of university offers. Explain a typical day in the office A lot of the day is spent answering emails and phone calls at this stage of the project (currently our company is working on the casino and hotel in Barangaroo - its a huge project and Im very excited to be a part of it) Whats the most interesting thing thats happened to you while working in architecture? I have had the gelegenheit to work on some very significant buildings. Dealing with the people that will use these buildings and understand the contributions they will make to society is both interesting and fulfilling. Name the best and worst parts of your job All jobs have the capability to contribute something to the world on some scale. Being in a field that allows for a very sizeable, permanent and obvious contribution to be made is probably what I love about it the most. It is, if we do it right, art with a programmed purpose. The worst part of my job would be the continuous back and forth that has to happen to get to the final product. It is inevitable and once you understand that it makes it a bit easier. Whats the most important career t ip someone has given you? Get out there I think this should be applied to every career and life in general. Career and personal development is so slow and limited when you are surrounded by the same four walls for too long. What do you wish someone had told you before starting in architecture? Do not take it too seriously and be transient. Where do people have to start to get into architecture and what is a standard salary package for this industry? At the time I enrolled, 2 units of mathematics was a prerequisite. Personally, I think that studying art, history, computational entwurf and English would also help. The path most architects take is studying a three-year Bachelor of Architecture degree, and then taking some time off to complete 18 weeks of mandatory work experience before enrolling into the two-year Master of Architecture. The Masters is necessary if you wish to become a registered architect. As with any degree, majors and honors could also be integrated into the study path. My personal journey involved studying the Bachelor of Architecture, majoring in Digital Architecture and Urban Design and Planning. Upon completion of the Bachelor degree, I took a year out to work in the industry before going back to complete the Master of Architecture. The starting salary for a graduate is approximately 45K. The average salary is around the 90K mark. Name a career highlight Working on a Frank Gehry building and being acknowledged in one of his books. I am not sure anything will top that. Whats next for you? Architecture is definitely something I love, but I would like to try and explore it in different ways. Im not sure what that means for now, but considering myself as being out there will hopefully keep me open to different opportunities. The combination of eating a large meal such as dinner and then sitting for hours could also be particularly harmful.More research is needed, but its possible that just taking a short break from your TV time and going for a walk may be enough to offset the harm of leisure-time sitting, Diaz added.For the study, whose findings were published in the Journal of the American Heart Association,researchers followed 3,592 African-Americans living in Jackson, Missouri for nearly eight-and-a-half years. The subjects reported how long they sat in front of the TV each day, as well as how much time they sat at work. They also reported how much time they spent on daily exercise.It was found that participants who spent four hours or more watching TV every day had a 50% greater risk of heart disease and death compared to those who spent two hours or less in front of the T V.And sitting down at work wasnt as bad as researchers expected the participants who sat the most for their jobs had the same health risks as the subjects who sat the least overall. This indicates that there is a contrast in the heart health effects of sitting and work and sprawling in front of a TV.So what is to be done? Exercise, of course.Our findings show that how you spend your time outside of work may matter more when it comes to heart health, said Diaz. Even if you have a job that requires you to sit for long periods of time, replacing the time you spend sitting at home with tenuous exercise could reduce your risk of heart disease and death.
